Girls just wanna have fun - Cyndi Lauper

I come home in the morning light,
My mother says "When you gonna live your life right?"
Oh,mother,dear,
We're not the fortunate ones,
And girls, they wanna have fun
Oh, girls, just wanna have fun.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This song is an old favourite of mine, introduced to me by my mom when I was 13 or 14. Though I don't exactly know who Cyndi Lauper is (she's famous during the 80s), I love this song simply because it celebrates the fact that girls just want to have fun. And today while on the train back to Subang Jaya to meet up with 2 of my best and closest friends since..like...forever, this song came up in my ipod. I almost smiled because it was like the cosmic knew I was going to have my own share of fun this afternoon. I love having Girl's Day Out. For as long as I can remember, Amal, Sarah and I have been having our GDOut since we were 14. And it would always be @ Sunway Pyramid, because that was the only closest shopping complex that we could go. From no Jusco then to new wings with TGIF (my fav food place) now. (Pyramid tu dh bosan dgn ktorg rasenye) It would be the same old ritual : lunch followed by a movie (sometimes a double movie) and lastly shopping. (except now Amal's doing the driving instead of our dads since she's the one with the car). Even at 22 we still aren't tired of the same old ritual.

So today, we decided that we were going to catch a movie. I'm not good @ commenting movies...because in general I like all movies. Action-packed ones, maybe a little less (not a fan of adrenaline-pumping stuff). Horrors, I try to avoid at all cost from watching them in the dark cinemas (except for Constantine because Keanu Reeves was in it, haha). But I love drama-movies (You've Got Mail & Chocolat are my top fav). And historical-slash-epic movies (LOTR, Kingdom Of Heaven, Alexander). Maybe because I simply love history. And animation (Toy Story being my absolute fav. Watch out for Toy Story 3 next year).

While my cousin and I were standing in line to purchase the movie tix, we came to realize that we haven't chosen a particular movie to watch yet. After narrowing down the options (sorry Public Enemies), it was between The Proposal and Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past. Couldn't exactly decide so I listed out the pros and cons. "Gfs past ade Jennifer Garner. And a wedding dress + wedding cake". "I love Jenn Garner", "But Proposal ade Ryan Reynolds" "He's hot" (Amal smiling wickedly) "I know" (me grinning evilly) No need to guess we ended up watching which movie. It was extremely hilarious, and I love Sandra's character. Icy queen and in control of her life (lol). Plus she was wearing Louboutin's black pumps. Next to Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin is my fav man. You can tell it's his shoes through his red soles trademark. So the first moment I saw Margaret's (Sandra Bullock) shoes, I was like "OMG, she's wearing Louboutin's".

Aside from the shoes, I think the movie was good. Jenn Garner would have to wait, for now...

I wanted to watch G.I Joe but it'll only be in cinemas on the 6th of August. Yes I know it's an action-packed movie which I said I'm not a fan of but I like Channing Tatum and he's in it. Action stunts aside, I'm sure I can be happy just by watching him. LOL!

Counting down to 15th August (Pt II)

A picture (particularly the picture above) is worth a thousand words. I couldn't agree more. What I have to do now is listen to Kasabian, because I've never heard of them before this (blame the malaysian airwaves ;p ) But since they're headlining the show, it's only fair if I at least know a few of their songs. From what I read, they sound more or less like Oasis. That should be good since I like Oasis. AAR will definitely be there. Boys Like Girls has yet to be confirmed. I'm hoping against hope they'll be there. BLG's one of my fav.

So, thank yous are in order. 1stly, to my mom : Though you have not yet bestow me with your "Yes", you did graciously supply me with the allowance $$$ that I oh-so-splurged on the tickets. We'll work on the "yes" later. Persistence is key dear mother ;D

2ndly, to my sometimes-annoying-that-I-could-almost-whack-you-if-not-for-the-fact-you're-the-only-kid bro-I-have-brother . I couldn't think of a better person to "chaperon" and accompany me that night. (And may the tix be the best 18th bday prezzie you've ever received. LOL).

3rdly, to my bestest of friend (cum baby sis) in the whole wide world. For keeping this (getting the tickets) a secret from mama+abah. Yes, I'll promise to get you the Billabong handbag you badly wanted.

And most importantly,to those two someones who were kind enough to "lend" me their Xpax nums in order to get the tix. You guys rock!

Plan B is now in motion. Wish me luck!
*Amal : I'll try and refrain myself from "partying" and jumping-up-and-down. Am there to purely enjoy good, live music ;p Ain : S.O.S with the dress code!!! Help! *

Counting down to 15th August (Pt I)

Oh.My.Effin'.God. It's one thing to have the World Stage live here in M'sia. But to have Tyson, Nick, Chris and Mike performing here as well. At sunway lagoon resort! Which is like, a stone's throw away from my house!....I'd kill to see them perform 'the wind blows' live. And 'gives you hell'...and other songs that they'll be performing. It's dejavu all over again. (Read : My dear mother saying NO! flatly to my face at my 3rd attempt of asking for permission to go.) The worst thing is, my brother's already making plans with his friends to go. I just know he'll find a way to get my mom's "green light". He did it once before. *Sighs* How can life be so cruel??

Courtesy of mtvasia.com : MTV World Stage Live In Malaysia will be staged at Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach at 6.00p.m., August 15, 2009. The show will premiere on MTV Asia Friday, 28 August 2009 at 8:00pm (GMT+8 hours).

(I'm aware of the melodramatic-ness. Just humour me for a while aight?)

*Shoutout to my bestie, Amal : Remember Nasi Kandar? Who knows if we're lucky, AAR makan nasi lemak pulak. ;p *

I could use a fresh beginning too...All of my regrets are nothing new

Hello, good morning, how you do?
What makes your risin' sun so new?

[Learning To Breathe - Switchfoot]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as I can remember, Switchfoot has been the oldest and all time favourite band of mine. (Jonathan Foreman was my first *coughs* love, but that's not the main point).

And while you can bet there will be more entries relating to Switchfoot in the forseeable future, I'm going to start today's "commentary" with Learning To Breathe. Yes, I should've started with "Dare You To Move", being that it's my most favourite song of all time and THE one song I absolutely can NOT get tired of listening to but this particular one is my second close fav. It's more of a private and personal song to me than DYTM is.

For those who've yet to know who or what Switchfoot is, they're a band (like, duh) from California. I started listening to Switchfoot in 2002 and got to know about their songs from watching A Walk To Remember. Two of their most famous tracks were in that movie. Ever wondered how sometimes you just "fall-in-love-at-first-sound" with some songs? Well, Dare You To Move was one of them. In 2002, I wasn't that good with computers and all the tech stuff. So the only time I got to listen to Switchfoot was when Hitz.fm was kind enough to play it on air for me. They weren't exactly mainstream-material, unlike Nickelback or Daughtry nowadays. When I finally got my monthly allowance, no need to guess that I made Speedy RM40 richer. The Beautiful Letdown is still one of my fav albums so far.

Anyway, last year Switchfoot came to Malaysia for their tour (Jon Foreman ate Nasi Kandar and surfed at Sunway Lagoon. How cool was that??!!). And while I was ready to fork out $ for the tix to their show, my mom said there's no absolute way she's letting me anywhere near a concert stage as long as I'm living under her care. (This was my 2nd attempt. The first was when I was in high school and Westlife came to Malaysia. I remembered Sarah, Amal and I wanted to go and watch the fab-five-irish-lads badly). Anyway, I found out that a former classmate of mine got free tix to Switchfoot's show and he said the concert was "Biase je". Biase je?? Hello, are you like tone deaf or something? (no, I dare not say that directly to his boyish face. Haha) And I remembered at that time two of my friends (Ain and Hern) were rooting for me to go to the concert. I'm still in envy with Ain for getting to go to Him's concert. How she did it and how she dressed for it is still a mystery to me...Mind you, she's a tudung clad girl who's really into "dark-goth-rock" music. And that's putting it mildly. When MCR first came to the scene in Malaysia, she was the first one in our class to even know about them. When the rest of us finally caught up with the MCR-Helena fever, she was already into new bands by then. She single-handedly made The Rasmus a household name in our class. She even won a dinner date with the band itself when they came to perform in Malaysia (really, I'm not making this up. She got the chance to sit in the same table with four rocking finnish dudes) but her mom said no (Wait, did she even told her mom she won?) So yeah, she's kind of my music Guru. Haha

Right, getting back on track.....

So it was a drab that I couldn't watch Switchfoot live and up close. There's always youtube, I tried to convince myself. But when I saw the commercial that 8TV is airing Switchfoot's showcase in Malaysia on one Sunday night, I knew instantly 8TV had made my day. Thank You soo very much Mr Izham (CEO of 8TV). I owe you one. So on Sunday night, for one hour I was in complete bliss. I was so jealous of Rina because she got to be the hostess throughout Switchfoot's stay in Malaysia. Then came the concert part. They performed Meant To Live, This Is Your Life, Stars, Dare You To Move (obvie) and other of their major hits. Cia and Teha, my roommates were such good friends for humouring me and my "Oh-My-God-It's-Jon!" moments. They sat with me for the whole hour and even turned up the volume (I was afraid it would bug them since they were studying but being such darlings, they said what better way to enjoy a rock concert than having the volume on full blast). And having them with me was not even the best part. The band was about to perform "Learning To Breathe" when Jon said "....This one's a personal favourite of mine..." I couldn't remember what else he said but the main point is : His personal favourite song is exactly the same as mine. OMG! Life could not be any more perfect than it already is. (See, I don't think it takes much to please me..Just a few of rockstars saying they composed a song for me and having their fav song being the same as mine Ha.Ha) Teha and Cia were smiling and shaking their heads at the sight of my love-struck expression.

So yeah..maybe it would've been much better had I gotten the chance to watch them perform live, but a girl can't have everything she wants in life right? And the fact that Jon and I now share something in common totally compensate any dissapoinment I felt for missing their show. Who knows, maybe the next time they're in Malaysia, I could be in the same table with them, eating Nasi Kandar. A girl can dream, aight..

Peyton and Maya

"I think it's more like romance, and hope, and inspiration. And that feeling that you get when other human beings pick up basic instruments and make sense of your world. And the day that I think it’s just about making money is going to be the day that I’ve betrayed everything I believe in. About music, and life, and myself."

-Peyton of One Tree Hill-

"Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness."

- Maya Angelou –

*Ok, Peyton's a fictional TV character and no, I don't personally know who Maya is but what they both said is exactly how I feel about music*

p/s Season 6 of One Tree Hill will be airing soon on 8TV. Yeay!

You'll be sad that you let me go

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[The Wind Blows - The All-American Rejects]

They say less is sometimes more. As an effort of trying to refrain myself from writing a ten page entry solely dedicated to Tyson thus beating the purpose of giving my two cents worth about the song, I'm just going to take a deep breath and say exactly ONLY 3 reasons why I absolutely LOVE this song.

1. It's a track totally different from what you usually get from The All-American Rejects. The song was perfectly harmonized and undeniably good from the get-go.

2. It's not your typical a-love-lost song that can sometimes be painstakingly mushy or unavoidably cheesey.

3. I can't give another concrete reason. All I know is I fell in love with the song the very first time I heard it on MTV. Wish I could feel the same way about a guy. Lol!

Their live perfomance on Letterman's show was just..beautiful... Letterman liked the harp (yes, there's a harp involved) We just like watching Tyson (which leads to clouding up our better judgement against the harp).

Want to know another thing that I noticed? The song has a faint resemblance of sounding like the soundtrack from the Topgun movie. Remember "Take My Breath Away"? (and no, not the Jessica Simpson remake)

Reviews were all rave for their album "When the World Comes Down". Other great tracks include "Back To Me", "Another Heart Calls, "Gives You Hell" (duh, obvie) and "I Wanna" (yes Tyson, I would very much want to touch you too, but that's beside the point. lol)

Maybe I should stop now before this gets even more irrelevent and I start to lose my objectivity.

We think you're a joke...shove your hope where it don't shine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Shove it - Santogold]

On the surface (and i.m.h.o) I think the song is about Brooklyn (Brooklyn we work hard...we broke but rich at heart) versus Manhattan (lofts, penthouses, upper east siders and trump tower). I say this because in a couple of shows that I've seen, whenever there's a rich-witch character that complains about their limo being late or how "crucial" it is not to wear the same outfit twice in a month (pfft!), at the mention of the word Brooklyn, they somehow look like they're about to pass out. But then again, what do I know about NY and the privileged people living there..The farthest I've been abroad was...nvm..

Back to the song...First heard it while watching Gossip Girl Season 2. And mind you, I couldn't think of a better song to compliment that particular scene. Somehow "Lonely boy" a.k.a Dan became the joke of the week for the entire school. So there Lonely Boy was, standing in the middle of the courtyard, all students there staring at him in disgust, shaking their heads. Clearly Dan's face says it all "Oh crap, what did I do now ?" And right on cue "We think you're a joke, shove your hope where it don't shine.." with the camera doing a 360 on Dan. All I can say is I'm lucky I'm not Dan.

Anyway, steering towards a more clearer subject (wouldn't want to end up with an episode recap here now do we?) I personally love the song (the intro being my favourite. Yet to be determined what instrument was used. Guitar?? Trombone?? Saxaphone??) And in any scene where you're up face-to-face with your nemesis, what better way for you to piss him or her off than having the song being played at the background, basically screaming "Dude, get out of my face. Don't even think you're going to win this" (lol!) It could be a decent post breakup song. It could even be the first song you wake up to in the morning (it does have an addictive tune that kinds of stick in your head for a while).

On an average, it's a pretty decent song (it did make its way to my fav playlist)..And just fyi, the singer was named "the artist to watch in 2008" by rolling stones. So I guess she must be good.. Have yet to listen to her full album though..

There're two more songs worth listening to that I found out from the show. In one episode, there's a violin-quartet version of Muse's "Time Is Running Out" (by The Section Quartet). It was hands down awesome. I did ask my mom whether I could take violin classes when I was 13 but she laughed at me like I had another head sprouting from my neck. *Sighs* Anyway, the other is a song called Good Day by Nappy Roots and Greg Street. If you have the time, try listening to those songs.

[ p.s, Thanks Ain. You know for what ;) ]
